A Weekend Escape: From Liguria to Lake Garda

[nggallery id=19]Italy is a country that offers so much, with charming sceneries, cities rich in history, wonderful landscapes, beaches, relaxing villages, towns rich of traditions and more. Italians love to spend weekends discovering these places and this is what last weekend I manage to make!

I decided to spend some days at the sparkling lake of Garda (the eastern most and largest of the lakes stretching from the plains towards the Dolomites). You know, Lake Garda’s romantic shores have inspired many poets, painters since the Roman period.

We drove 2-3 hours from Genoa and arrived in Sirmione town. I love Sirmione town, even if it is invaded by tourists which come from all over the world, it preserves its picturesque character.

This charming town is on the shores of Lake Garda and its renowned for its thermal springs (it was a spa destination even in Roman times), medieval streets, roman ruins and the fairytale castle of Rocca Scaligera. Furthermore, in the small pedestrianized area of the town, there are many shops, mostly selling souvenirs.

The first day, we arrived in Sirmione just for lunch time, so we decided to stop at the restaurant “La Nuova Botte”, in the historical center of the town. As starter we tried their Caprese with a fresh mozzarella. Then, we had two first courses, “spaghetti with clams” and “bigoli pasta with duck sauce”. Ingredients were fresh and quality was great. I recommend this restaurant to anyone going to Sirmione.

After lunch we visited the fairytale castle, which is more exactly a fortress and admired wonderful views over Lake Garda. In the evening, we walked along the waterfront promenade, a pleasant place to relax!

We spent a nice weekend and since Lake Garda is only 2-3 hours away, I think it will be a good excuse to escape another time.

**As I said above, although Sirmione is very attractive, its small historical center gets choked during high season, so if you are searching atmosphere, I suggest to visit it out of season**.
