The marble quarries of Carrara, famous throughout the world for their precious marble obtained from the majestic Apuan Alps, rich in marble basins, since the imperial age have given art, design and industry the raw material for
the creation of famous masterpieces of sculpture and architecture. This exclusive and private tour will take you to the discovery of the extraction basins thanks to 4 × 4 off-road vehicles and authorized Tourist Guides, reaching unique and fascinating white sceneries.
The visit of the three extraction basins is exciting and unforgettable; with off-road vehicles you will reach 1,000 meters height and admire open quarries, wells and tunnels. You will learn about the methods of extraction and transport of marble, from the Roman era to our days.
How did the miners live, what did they eat? We will answer this question with a tasting of the famous “Lardo di Colonnata”, discovering how it is left to mature for a long time, and how this ancient food was important to provide energy for the hard job of quarrymen.
At the end of the tour you will visit a sculpture studio, where marble takes its noblest form, turning into a works of art.
