Spending some days in the Cinque Terre, you could understand how the colorful hamlets, the unique flavors, the breathtaking landscape, the deep blue sea and the energy coming from this area have inspired several renowned writers and poets such as Shelly, Lawrence, Byron, Dickens and becoming famous as “The Poet’s Gulf” area.
The Italian writer and winner of the Nobel prize for Literature Eugenio Montale was one of them. Monterosso village became his inspiration!
Monterosso with its lemon trees and beaches was Montale’s summer home. This wonderful destination gave inspiration for some of his most famous works. His years in Cinque Terre shaped him into the writer, artist, and accomplished man he became.
When visiting this village in the Cinque Terre, do not enjoy just its beaches, search for Montale’s corners and visit the places dedicated to him experiencing the splendid emotions that the poet Eugenio Montale captured in his writings.
Montale wrote about his love for Monterosso, Cinque Terre in different poems. He says:
“Standing on the dramatic cliffs of Cinque Terre, I have no wants, needs, or concerns. I am simply coexisting with the land. The air is cleansing and looking down I see vegetation speckled with houses and a few restaurants and I think, this is life in its most basic components: beauty, food, and nature.”
”Here by a miracle the striving of frustrate passions is stilled, here even we, the poorest, find a fortune and it is the scent of lemons…..”
