Cinque Terre is in Liguria, Italy. The name literally means Five Lands and it refers to five small villages: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore.

The Cinque Terre are 5 colored villages famous around the world for the national park with many walking paths and for the picturesque small towns built on cliffs along the Mediterranean sea with romantic amazing panoramas!

I think everyone at least once in his life should travel to the Cinque Terre. When travelling to this beautiful destination, I always suggest to be sure to visit the authentic Cinque Terre. Maybe, it can be useful to read this post “ 5 things to do in Cinque Terre” (it’s my personal list of things to do when you are planning a holiday in this part of Liguria).

I think a trip to the Cinque Terre have its own travel style and it suits a certain person. These villages are far away from the traffic and the stress of the cities. They are a paradise for nature lovers: the protected national park is amazing to walk and hike.

The Cinque Terre need to be visited taking time, going slowly. In my opinion they need at least 3 nights, it’s the best way to live the real essence of this part of Liguria.

The Cinque Terre villages from west to east

Monterosso al mare is the biggest of the 5 villages with an old part, a new town, sandy beaches, a large promenade. It is the western-most village.

Vernazza is the favorite among tourists. It has narrow alleys and great restaurants. The church built on the water is unique and a castle dominating the village. The harbor is picturesque and there’s also a very small beach where you can relax having a gelato.

Corniglia is different from the other villages. It has its own charm. It is built above the sea on the rocks away from everything. It has great shops and from there the view of the ligurian coast is incredible!

Manarola is the smallest of the 5 villages with a small harbor where people love to dip from its rocks and swim. This village is amazing and most of Cinque Terre pictures are taken from there.

Riomaggiore is the most easterly of the Cinque Terre villages and close to La Spezia city. It is one of the largest towns in 5 terre, like Monterosso. It has a lovely harbor, a castle and a beautiful church. There’s also a rocky beach and the ferries connections are very good.
