Cycling the Italian Riviera: from Portofino to Cinque Terre

A cycling tour which allows you to discover the most picturesque villages of the Italian Riviera, such as Portofino, Camogli and the Cinque Terre, reaching over to the wildest side of the Ligurian hinterland. A tour where lush green vegetation, pastel-coloured houses and the deep blue Ligurian Sea will accompany you all along the way. The tour can either be done by e-bike or mountain bike, as you prefer.

01

Welcome to the Italian Riviera

Today is your arrival day. Benvenuto! We will lovingly choose one of our favourite boutique hotels for you, far from the crowds, with great service and in a convenient position. We want you to be able to discover for yourself all of the charm of the Ligurian villages, combined with a lively and still authentic atmosphere.

Cycle in Portofino Natural Park

Today with your bike tour guide you’ll cycle along the ancient Aurelia Road, until you reach the village of San Lorenzo della Costa. Here as your bike ride continues, you will enter the Park of Portofino by climbing up to Portofino Vetta, the highest entry point of the promontory’s natural park. Biking on roads paths will give you the chance to really appreciate the beautiful views and the Mediterranean vegetation in this protected area!

At lunch you can stop at one of the ancient restored watermills in the area. From here, following a scenic rural path, you will reach the famous village of Portofino and have time free time at your disposal to enjoy it. From Portofino, you will take the panoramic road overlooking the sea until you reach Santa Margherita Ligure.

Live "la dolce vita" in Portofino and beyond

Today you will explore the picturesque villages in the heart of Portofino’s Natural Park at your own pace with your knowledgeable and passionate local private tour guide.

Start off from the picturesque village of Santa Margherita Ligure – once called the “salotto” of the entire Gulf, its “salon” – famous for its painted facades, lush gardens, and villas overlooking the sea. Enjoy a panoramic trip by public boat and reach the postcard perfect village of Portofino. You’ll be fascinated by the arches of colourful houses and enchanted by the lovely “Piazzetta” which overlooks the tiny harbour.

Then reach San Fruttuoso by boat – this is an amazing cove with a medieval abbey built right on the beach, restored and protected by FAI, the Italian National Trust. 

You cannot help falling in love with these unique towns!

DAY

04

From the coast to the hinterland

Today you’ll reach the Ligurian hinterland, arriving at Borzonasca village and more precisely at shimmering Lake Giacopiane. This is a wild area of Liguria, immersed in lush forests where you can admire, from a distance, the incredible view of the sea on one side and the deep crystalline water of the lake on the other. You will bike along enjoyable rural paths surrounded by woods peppered with a handful of farmhouses. If you are fortunate, you may have the chance to meet some wild animals, such as the wild horses! Along the way, you will stop in a typical countryside refuge to have lunch, tasting local specialties.

Cinque Terre bike tour

Today you’ll discover the Cinque Terre, starting with Vernazza, from where your foray into the fascinating world of the world famous “five lands” begins. You will make a short visit here, where you will stop to admire this beautiful village that lies at sea level. Along the way there will be many stops for taking photos and to admire the vineyards that overlook the sea. 

You will go back up on the hills again using a secondary road with very little traffic, arriving at the sanctuary of the Madonna di Reggio, where you can rest for a few minutes in the shade of the centuries-old holm oaks.

Returning again up towards the panoramic road, you will stop off at the sanctuary of Soviore above Monterosso. After visiting the church, taste a glass of local white wine with a bite of typical focaccia in the shade of the oaks.
